As in the game, the group eat together and Ann lays down after because they’ve all eaten too much food. Both the player and the characters are lead to think Ann is asleep.

This is the part in the game where she is sleep on the sofa when Yusuke is asking Ren and Ryuji about how the Phantom Thieves all know each other and Ryuji says he has known Ann since Middle School but nobody wants to be her friend due to being raised overseas and her looks, saying other girls hate her and the others stay away (Also linking into how Ann was basically shamed and bullied in school for being pretty) then Ryuji openly caring about Ann as he thinks she is sleeping and cant hear

… and all along she was awake!

Her eyes looks so watery too.

she heard Ren’s story in full, Ryuji’s story also. Imagine hearing first that Ryuji really cares for her when she believed she had nobody and then hearing about how the leader of their group was basically a victim himself, as well as Yusuke being a survivor of Madarame and she being a survivor of Kamoshida’s abuse. 

Everybody says Ann’s acting is bad when she is trying to act in Person, but this was amazing acting on Ann’s side, trying not to let on to her friends that she heard them and how much they mean to her, as after this she joined in with their conversation on their friendship and the Phantom Thieves, which really has became their family.
