I hate that so many people are acting like Pink had a choice in her power dynamic with Pearl.
Everything we’ve seen about her character makes it clear that, once she got her colony and started to understand how things work, Pink does not like that other gems follow her without question. It’s likely a major factor behind running the rebellion as Rose and not as PD: because she wanted gems to follow her because they believed her message, not because she was their Diamond and they Had To.
And Pearl knew. She had to know, there was no way to do it without Pearl knowing. Pink, by all accounts, did the best she could in giving choice to someone who was literally built to not make choices. And yeah, it failed.
I get that Pink screwed a lot of things up. Almost everything she ever tried failed to work out the way she wanted it to. But I think people are being unfair to her, as if Pink had other options that would have gone any better.
The scene in Can’t Go Back shows that Pink did try to talk to the diamonds first. And it failed. They treated her like a child without listening to what she was actually saying. So she tried to give her claims more weight. And it failed again. And every time she tried something new, it failed again.
Until finally she reached her extreme measures: She faked her death, thinking it would finally end things.
And she was wrong. At the end of the day, she didn’t understand that the other Diamonds still loved her. So she tried to end it, and it backfired. Hard.
And what did she do? She dedicated 6000 years to trying to undo the damage. And she failed there too.
And then she fell in love with someone who could show her how to really care. Someone who could bring her down to earth, help her see through her own bias. And she saw a chance to make something new, something better than her, something that maybe wouldn’t fail the same way she had, because they would be capable of growing, and learning, and could be raised on a world that taught them to care.
So she made Steven. And she hurt a lot of people in doing so, but in a strange way… she was also right. Steven has helped the gems overcome issues in really only 2-3 years that Pink/Rose couldn’t fix in 6000. But it’s not like she wasn’t trying. It’s not like she was constantly motivated by selfish needs and didn’t care about those around her. She had no good options, and at the end of the day we don’t know if it could have gone differently because this is the outcome we have.
At the end of the day, I don’t think Pink/Rose was a bad person, or evil, or even as selfish as people are currently making her out to be (Selfish, yes absolutely, I just think the degree has been exaggerated).
I view Pink/Rose as a Tragic character. She was young, inexperienced, and in a situation she was completely inequipped to handle, with no support on any sides. And she tried. She tried so hard, and she failed. Over and over again, every thing she tried failed. But time passed, and she finally reached a point that she met someone and felt like, even though everything had gone so wrong, there was a chance for things to be good.
And the true tragedy is she was wrong again. She thought that Earth was safe, the diamonds weren’t coming back, and her child could have a good life. But the Diamonds came back. The cluster almost hatched. Steven inherited a boatload of problens that Rose didn’t even know were still there. And she’s not around to help.
Everyone is talking about how she faked her death and became Steven to escape responsibility, but…
Rose took responsibility for shattering Pink. Even if they didn’t know she was Pink, Rose never claimed that she wasn’t responsible for causing the diamonds to use the Corruption Weapon. She never claimed she didn’t start this war. She just had a different name when she did these things.
And when she became Steven, it was after 6000 years of relative peace. Yeah, there were Gem monsters around still, but she had no way of knowing Homeworld was ever going to be a problem again. She didn’t know she was going to have responsibilities to take care of in 14 years.
Rose Quartz made a lot of mistakes and hurt a lot of people, and that is something she can’t put on anyone else.
But she wasn’t a bad person. At least, I don’t think she was.
You know. People laughed about Garnet being a fusion as a theory, then it happened. Everyone scoffed over Rose being PD, and then Rebecca Sugar fucking did that. So, following a trend here, there’s one other one we’ve joked about, and I swear to god if it turns out Onion is a Diamond (White Diamond, though originally we were all like “Oh, he’s Yellow” from what I remember), I’m gonna lose my mind
